ABOUT KEVIN MCMAHILL
Sheriff Kevin McMahill’s renowned law enforcement career spans more than three decades of service at every level of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD). After being elected in 2021, he has served as Sheriff of Clark County, leading the department through a period of transformation, innovation, and resilience.
As Sheriff, McMahill delivered on the promises that defined his campaign:
-
Stronger Officers, Safer Communities: Created the LVMPD Wellness Bureau, expanded access to clinicians, reduced officer suicides to historic lows, and built a lasting culture of wellness across the department.
-
Relentless Crime Reduction: Reduced homicides by 32% in a single year and achieved year-over-year declines in all major violent crime categories through intelligence-led policing.
-
Innovation That Saves Lives, Time, and Taxpayer Dollars: Built one of the world’s most advanced Drone as First Responder programs, introduced Cybertruck patrol vehicles through public-private partnerships, and deployed cutting-edge CSI technologies, crime analytics, and digital case management systems.
At the same time, McMahill has focused on the root causes of crime, including addiction, mental health, and homelessness. He strengthened authentic community relationships and advanced global homeland security efforts to safeguard Las Vegas’ tourism economy.
Sheriff McMahill has also guided the department through some of the most difficult crises in recent history, including the active shooter attacks at UNLV and the Athletic Club, the Tesla VBIED attack at Trump Towers, the firebombing of Teslas in 2025, and numerous other major incidents. His steady leadership has been defined by decisive action, collaboration, and a commitment to community trust.
Before being elected Sheriff, McMahill served six years as Undersheriff, providing strong and steady leadership during challenges such as the 1 October tragedy and the civil unrest of 2020. His law enforcement career began after serving three years in the United States Army. He joined Metro in 1990 as a patrol officer and steadily rose through the ranks—sergeant, lieutenant, captain, deputy chief, assistant sheriff, and eventually undersheriff.
Along the way, McMahill built a reputation for innovative community policing. At Bolden Area Command, he developed groundbreaking partnerships that achieved a 40% drop in violence and earned LVMPD the prestigious Webber-Seavey Award for excellence in community policing. He also established the Office of Community Engagement to strengthen long-term relationships with residents across the valley.
Today, as Sheriff of Clark County, Kevin McMahill continues to lead with the same vision that has defined his career: protecting families, reducing crime, advancing innovation, and building stronger officers for safer communities.
